Easley Winery 2.0

Easley Winery was established by Jack and Joan Easley in 1974 with a basic purpose: produce and sell great wine that people will love. This passion for winemaking can be seen throughout Easley Winery's rich history as Indiana's oldest family-owned winery, and continues today through Mark and Meredith Easley.

In a world of Facebook updates, tweets, and YouTube videos, Easley Winery is embracing new technology without compromising its commitment to make wine tasting and wine education a personal experience. You can follow us on Twitter at @EasleyWinery or on Facebook and get updates on upcoming events, new releases, and news stories about the wine industry. You can also check-in with Foursquare on your smartphone when you visit us in downtown Indy. I would encourage you, if you have not done so already, to visit our website at EasleyWinery.com and sign up for our monthly E-Newsletter.

This blog will serve as a storyboard for the behind-the-scenes stories of Easley Winery. You'll get to know our staff, travel with us to events around the Midwest, and learn about the art of winemaking. Please check back often and see what great things Easley Winery is doing today!

For the Love of Grapes

Q: What does it take to make great wine?
A: Great grapes and terrific communication between the grape grower and the wine maker.
There is only so much a winemaker can do when it comes to making wine from the grapes he acquires. So much of the success of the wine depends on the grapes' attributes. These attributes come from the soil, rain, frost, pruning activities, and natural predators such as birds, insects and disease. These and countless other challenges are what keep vineyard growers up at night. These are also the factors that determine the yield and quality of the grapes that the wine maker receives. Being able to depend on the vineyard grower to stay on top of the grapes' needs and also keep track of the brix (sugar level of the grapes) and potential yield of the grapes enable the wine maker to plan and then create a wonderful wine.

Easley Winery is proud to have long term contracts and open relationships with several grape growers in Indiana and other states to ensure that we are receiving the highest quality fruit and are taking full advantage of the wonderfully diverse fruit available.
Easley Winery employees recently took a field trip to three vineyards throughout the state of Indiana. This trip was an educational experience to learn about where the grapes come from for the Easley wines that everyone enjoys. These vineyards are diverse in their approaches, experience levels, and kinds of grapes that they offer. What they all have in common are passionate vineyard growers who are committed to growing the best fruit possible in order to help Easley fulfill their mission of making great wines.

Please feel free to stop by the winery to see some more pictures of our trip and discuss the experience with our staff. It was great to learn about the many different varieties of grapes that make up our wines and also afforded the opportunity for the wine makers and the vineyard growers to communicate and plan for this upcoming harvest!

Traminette Wine Coming Soon

Traminette is the newest wine that Easley Winery will be releasing very soon. This is a wonderful Indiana grape that adapts well to cold climates. It is a cross of the Gewurztraminer with Johannes SeyveIt. The traminette vine is vigorous and produces a white grape that we have crafted into a fruity white wine that pairs well with a spicy Tai beef Satay in peanut sauce or a cheese and fruit tray. Easley Traminette would also go well with orange roughy parmesan.

Food and Wine at Thanksgiving

Pairing wine with food is not an exact science. You should drink what you enjoy, period. Do not force yourself to drink a pairing that someone else claims is excellent if you do not like it. The following suggestions are for those who want to experiment with what wine and food we at Easley Winery enjoy matching up around the holidays. If you have never had the wines below, feel free to stop in for complimentary tasting 7 days a week. Monday - Saturday 9am-6pm, Sunday 12-4.

Pairing wine and cheese. Due to the saltiness and texture qualities of cheese, different types of cheese do well with different types of wine. A few favorite matches include: Blue Cheese with Easley Governor’s Riesling or Specialty Ice Wine. Cheddar cheese is more flexible and can be paired with many different types of wine. It goes great with Easley’s Chancellor or Governor’s Cabernet Sauvignon.

Turkey and ham are served quite often around the holidays. When deciding what wine to serve to your friends and family or to take to the host, it is hard to go wrong with Easley’s Governor’s Chardonnay. The reason is because it is light, and does not overpower the menu being served. If you know you or your host prefer to stay on the sweet side, then take along a bottle of Barrel White as well. Enjoy yourselves and have fun this holiday season!
